The firm primarily operates on the buy-side, representing large public and private enterprises in designing and executing acquisition strategies. Additionally, the firm represents a select number of family-owned companies each year in the sale of all or part of their businesses. Founded in 1998, the firm has completed more than $14 billion in transactions across 30+ states and Canada.
Our client is seeking an experienced, operationally minded individual to serve as VP, Technical Deal Analysis on one of its dedicated buy-side advisory teams. Each team is assigned to a single public company client in the industrial services space and is responsible for developing and executing a long-term acquisition program alongside that client's management team.
This role has been created because financial statements and management presentations alone only tell part of the story. The VP, Technical Deal Analysis, is responsible for going beyond the numbers by conducting on-site evaluations to understand what a business actually does and develop a credible, independent view of its operational quality and long-term potential. This is a field-based role for someone who has spent meaningful time in or around the types of businesses being evaluated, not someone who has only analyzed them from a desk.
Engagement Context
Our client's buy-side teams work exclusively with enterprise clients pursuing programmatic acquisition strategies in the physical economy, including the manufacturing, construction, distribution, transportation, storage, and related sectors. The VP, Technical Deal Analysis will be actively evaluating targets on a rolling basis, with travel to candidate locations a regular and expected part of the role.
Key Responsibilities
On-Site Target Evaluation
Conduct structured on-site visits to acquisition candidates across the United States
Assess operational reality against what is represented in financial statements, CIMs, and management presentations
Develop an independent view of each target's technical capabilities, workforce quality, equipment, and facilities
Identify operational risks, deferred liabilities, and value drivers that would not be visible through document review alone
Technical Assessment and Reporting
Produce clear, structured site visit reports that allow deal leads and client management to make fast, informed decisions
Quantify or qualify technical observations in terms of their impact on valuation, deal structure, or integration planning
Flag material concerns early in the process before significant deal resources are committed
Collaborate with the Deal Analysis and Execution team to ensure technical findings are reflected in valuation models and diligence workstreams
Industry and Competitive Intelligence
Develop a working understanding of each target's competitive positioning within its specific segment of the industrial services sector
Assess long-term opportunity based on market dynamics, customer relationships, geographic presence, and operational scalability
Provide the research and deal execution teams with technical context that improves the quality of their work
Client and Team Interaction
Communicate findings directly to client management and deal leadership in a clear, credible manner
Participate in client strategy sessions to help refine acquisition criteria based on patterns observed across evaluated targets
Represent the company professionally in interactions with target company management and employees during site visits
β
Experience
Substantial hands-on experience in the operational or technical side of the industrial services sector, such as construction, specialty contracting, distribution, transportation, manufacturing, or a related field
A career background that includes direct exposure to how these businesses actually operate, not just how they are analyzed
Prior experience in a deal-related role (M&A advisory, corporate development, private equity operations) is a meaningful plus
Track record of forming credible, independent judgments in field environments with limited information
Technical Skills
Ability to read and interpret financial statements in the context of an operational assessment
Familiarity with the financial and operational characteristics of businesses in the industrial services sector (e.g., contract structures, equipment cycles, labor dynamics, licensing requirements)
Strong written communication skills; able to produce concise, well-organized site visit reports without heavy editing
Soft Skills & Leadership Attributes
Confident and credible in the field; able to walk a job site, ask the right questions, and earn the respect of operators quickly
Entrepreneurial and self-directed; comfortable structuring your own time and managing a heavy travel schedule without close supervision
Strong interpersonal skills; able to build trust with business owners and operators quickly from initial interactions
Patient and thorough; willing to take the time to understand a business properly rather than defaulting to surface-level observations
Sound judgment and discretion consistent with a confidential, client-first advisory environment
Reporting Structure
The VP, Technical Deal Analysis, will report directly to a Deal Lead assigned to their team and will work in close coordination with the Senior Associates on the Research and Intelligence and Deal Analysis and Execution teams.
Location & Work Arrangement
This is currently an in-office role and is expected to remain in-office for the foreseeable future. The offices are located in Fort Worth, Texas.
